We are delighted of offer a tour to Croatia and Bosnia. For the first and last night’s we will be staying at the luxurious 4 star Hotel Park which is Frank Mackin’s favourite hotel in Europe. It really is a superb hotel and has won many awards for its service. For more information on the hotel check their website www.parkhotel.hr Situated in Makarska on the most beautiful part of the Adriatic coast. The hotel is located directly on the promenade and beach and is only 300 metres to the old town centre. Makarska is a real gem of a town and was founded by the ancient Greeks. It has a traditional harbour which serves as the focal point for its long fishing tradition. Nestled around a horseshoe shaped bay, dominated by dramatic mountains. It has numerous cafes, restaurants, bars, market stalls and shops. The narrow stone paved streets and terracotta roof tops are rich in history with many historical monuments including St Mark’s RC Cathedral in the main square. For 3 nights we will be staying in the centre of Sarajevo in the 4 star Hotel Bosnia. For more information on the hotel check their website www.bosniahotels.com.
Frank always believes that if you are staying in a city it is always better to stay in the centre. Then everything is in walking distance and you don’t have the hassle of local transport or taxis. Hotel Bosnia meets this requirement as it is in the heart of the old Bascarsija district.
Sarajevo is the Capital city of Bosnia and is still undiscovered. If there is one place in Europe that symbolises the crossroads between East and West, Sarajevo would have to be it. It is here that the Byzantine and Ottoman empires brought their culture, traditions and religions. Very few places in the world can boast of hosting an Orthodox and a Catholic church, a mosque and a synagogue all in the same square. Sarajevo is proud of its long-standing tradition of multi-ethnicity and it thrives in its diversity. A walk through Sarajevo is a walk through the past.
Sarajevo is a very welcoming city that feels like home. You won’t be overwhelmed by its size of enormous buildings, rather you will be mesmerised by its quaint beauty, cafes teeming day and night with all age groups, and the hospitality of a perfect stranger who invites you for a drink. The city is surrounded by stunning hills and mountains. Now is the time to discover it.
We depart Dublin Airport for our direct flight to Zadar in Croatia. On arrival we are met by our tour leader and travel by coach to Makarska where we will be staying overnight in the 4 star Hotel Park.
After breakfast we travel to Sarajevo via the stunning Biokovo Mountains. Our lunch time is in Mostar on the banks of the mighty Nereteva River. We will visit the Stari Most, or Old Bridge which collapsed from tank shelling in 1993. It was rebuilt in 2004 at a cost of €17 million . There are numerous shops, stalls and very inexpensive restaurants. We then proceed to Sarajevo travelling through the Bosnian countryside where we will be staying for 3 nights in the Hotel Bosnia.
After breakfast we travel to the ancient town of Jajce with its spectacular medieval citadel set on top of the nearby hill. Built in the 13th century it has phenomenal views of the surrounding area. We visit the stunning Pliva Waterfalll which locals rightly claim is one of the most beautiful in the world. It is in the centre of town and it cascades 21m into the Vrbas River. We then travel to Travnik the political centre and cultural powerhouse of central Bosnia. The city is situated in the valley of the Lasva River and bordered by Vlasic Mountain to the North and Mount Vilenica to the south. Travnik in its glory days was the number one city in in the Ottoman Empire and has managed to preserve its medieval character well. We then return to our hotel late afternoon.
After breakfast we travel to the town of Visegrad, almost on the border with Western Serbia. It is a spectacular setting surrounded by green limestone ravines. We visit the Unesco listed 16th Century Cuprija na Drina (Bridge on the Drina) which is a magnificent Ottoman bridge spanning the wide river. It gained worldwide fame from the Nobel Prize winner Ivo Andric’s novel, The Bridge on the Drina. A truly wonderful book which Frank recommends you read. It will give you a true insight on this part of the Balkans. We depart late afternoon for our return to Sarajevo.
After breakfast we travel south for Croatia. Our lunch time stop is in Medjugore in Herzegovina. This is one of the most famous places of pilgrimage in the world attracting millions of visitors since 1981. We depart Medjugore late afternoon and return to our overnight stop in the Hotel Park, Makarska.
After breakfast we say goodbye to our hosts and travel to Zadar Airport for our return flight back to Dublin.
Please note that this is our planned itinerary but sometimes due to circumstances outside our control we may have to alter it slightly.
